How to get to Itacaré

The question when booking a flight is always the same: which airport to land at, and how to cover the last stretch. This guide answers both at once.

Short answer

Itacaré has no airport. The usual way in is Jorge Amado Airport in Ilhéus (IOS), about 70 km away — a 1h20 to 1h30 drive on the BA-001. Three options leave from the airport: a private car (straight to your guesthouse, at your time), a shared van (cheaper, fixed departures, central drop-off) and the public bus (cheapest, but connecting through downtown Ilhéus). Salvador is about 400 km away, a 6 to 7 hour drive.

Which airport to fly into

Ilhéus (IOS) is, in practice, Itacaré's airport: about 70 km and a single road, no connections. The terminal is small, sits in the Pontal district, and getting into a car takes minutes.

Salvador (SSA) has far more flights and timings, but it is about 400 km away — 6 to 7 hours by road, or a connecting flight to Ilhéus. It only pays off when the fare difference is large and you have a spare day in the itinerary.

On the final tally, it is almost always worth paying a bit more to fly into Ilhéus and reach Itacaré the same day, in daylight.

The 70 km between Ilhéus and Itacaré

The whole stretch runs on the BA-001, paved and signposted, cutting through Atlantic Forest and passing Serra Grande, a village in the Uruçuca district about 45 km from Ilhéus.

It is a winding road with little lighting and sections without a hard shoulder. That changes the time estimate: 1h20 on dry tarmac in daylight, longer at night or in rain. It is not a stretch to rush.

Private car, van or bus

  • Private car — leaves when your flight lands, goes straight to your guesthouse and allows stops on the way. The choice for anyone arriving with children, big luggage or little time.
  • Shared van — cheaper per person, but on a fixed schedule, picking up other passengers and dropping off at a central point in the village.
  • Public bus — the cheapest, with departures spread across the day and boarding in downtown Ilhéus, not at the airport. Add the taxi to the bus station when comparing prices.

Rule of thumb: travelling alone and unhurried, the bus does the job. From three people up, the private car lands close to the van total — and it takes you to the door.

Arriving in a rental car

You can rent in Ilhéus and drive. The BA-001 is straightforward by day, and having a car helps for the far beaches such as Jeribucaçu, Engenhoca and Itacarezinho.

Two things to weigh first: Itacaré village has limited parking and narrow streets in high season, and a first drive on an unfamiliar mountain road, at night, after a flight, is not the best way to start a holiday.

Frequently asked questions

Does Itacaré have an airport?

No. The reference airport is Jorge Amado in Ilhéus (IOS), about 70 km away — a 1h20 to 1h30 drive on the BA-001.

How long does it take from Ilhéus to Itacaré?

1h20 to 1h30 in normal conditions, for about 70 km. Allow more at night or in heavy rain.

Can I reach Itacaré via Salvador?

You can, but it is about 400 km and 6 to 7 hours by road, or a connecting flight to Ilhéus. It only pays off with a large fare difference.

Is there a bus from Ilhéus airport straight to Itacaré?

The scheduled service leaves from downtown Ilhéus, not the airport. Anyone choosing the bus has to add the trip to the bus station.

Is renting a car worth it for a stay in Itacaré?

It helps for the more distant beaches, but the village has limited parking in high season. Many visitors prefer to arrive by transfer and use local transport day to day.

Is the BA-001 dangerous at night?

It is neither closed nor prohibited, but it has curves, little lighting and stretches without a hard shoulder. At night it demands more attention and more travel time.
